Summer Camp 2008

Camp Descriptions

TEENIES: 3 - 4 years (will not turn 5 during camp)
Limit 10 campers per session

  • 9:30 am – 12:30 pm 
  • Must be completely potty-trained
  • Before a child turns 5, he/she is considered a TEENIES camper!
  • Bring a snack and water

June 2 - 6
CHIRPING CHICKADEES:  Soar with the hawks, build nests with the chickadees and hunt for insects with the woodpeckers.

 

June 9 - 13 
DOODLEBUGS:  Look for ladybugs, buzz with the bees and wiggle with the worms. A week filled with insect fun!

 

July 1 - 3 (Three-Day Camp, Tuesday - Thursday)
ART A-GO-GO:  Campers will get messy creating masterpieces from clay, finger paints and natural objects.

 

July 14 - 18
FISH & FROGS:  Get to know our friends who live in the creek and wetlands. Learn how a tadpole becomes a frog. Discover what a drought meants to water inhabitants.

 

August 4 - 8
SEEDLINGS: Explore the world of plants. See how a seed grows into a plant. Taste edible seeds. (We see yummy popcorn in your future!)

 

August 18 - 22 
FOREST FRIENDS: Who lives in Dunwoody Park? Learn about the plants and animals that live here. Even the trees are our friends.

 

August 25 - 29 
WET & WONDERFUL: Get wet every day in our steamy August weather. Cool off in the creek and toss water balloons! Learn how water conservation and water fun CAN go hand in hand!

LITTLES: Rising Young 5's, Kindergarteners & 1st Graders
Limit 20 campers per session

  • Some camps scheduled for mornings; some for afternoons
  • Morning Camps: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
  • Afternoon Camps: 1:30 – 4:30 pm
  • Afternoon campers get in the creek every day!
  • Once a child turns 5, he/she is considered a LITTLES camper!
  • Bring a snack and water

May 27 - 30 (4-Day Morning Camp, Tuesday - Friday)
ART RANGERS: Nature inspires campers to create artworks as they learn about the creatures who livein the fields, stream, forest and wetlands of Dunwoody Park.

 

June 2 - 6 
LITTLE GARDENERS: (Afternoon Camp) Learn how a garden grows through planting a garden, hands-on activities and crafts. Explore how to practice water conservation and keep a garden happy! 

 

June 9 - 13
ANIMALS WITHOUT BACKBONES: (Afternoon Camp) Time to learn about our creepy crawly friends! Discover insects, spiders and millipedes.

 

June 16 - 20
MARSH MADNESS: (Morning Camp) Time to get wet as campers explore the creek and wetlands each day. Learn how water conservation is critical to the marsh habitat.

 

July 7 - 11
OVER THE RAINBOW: (Afternoon Camp) . . . Way up high! Become an astronaut, learn about the night sky and nocturnal animals. Fernbank's Skylab planetarium comes to visit.

 

July 14 - 18
WATER'S EDGE: (Afternoon Camp) Explore different bodies of water - rivers, lakes, oceans and wetlands. Who lives in which kind? How do we take care of them? What happens in a drought? Enjoy Wildcat Creek every day.

 

July 21 - 25
LET'S GET ENERGIZED: (Morning Camp) Hands-on experiments with gravy, magnets, sound, temperature, surface tension, even electricity. Your children produce new kinds of energy every day. (But you already knew that!)

 

July 28 - August 1 
FLYING FRIENDS: (Morning Camp) Learn all about birds and their flying friends - butterflies, dragonflies and bats. Do they all build nests? Nope!

 

August 4 - 8
SASSY SAPLINGS: (Afternoon Camp) Discover trees from new heights in our treehouse. Learn about the parts of trees. What creatures live in the roots? In the trunk? In the canopy?

MIDDLES: Rising 2nd – 4th Graders

UP A TREE TOGETHER: Get a new view on trees from our treehouse. Explore tree parts, needs and types. Learn the many gifts trees give us.

 

June 2-6
WATER WORLDS: Explore streams & rivers, oceans, wetlands and lakes. Learn the importance of water conservation and the impact of a drought on our planet's essential water worlds.


June 9 - 13
CREEPY CRITTERS: This is BUGS week! Butterflies, ladybugs, roaches, millipeds, spiders, daddy long-legs, our resident honeybees - get to know them all!

 

June 16-20
HARNESS THE POWER: Sunlight, waterpower, electricity, fossil fuels, and your kids' own unlimited energy! Mix them all together for a great week.


June 23 - 27 
MARVELOUS MAMMALS: (4-Day Camp, Monday - Thursday) What do chipmunks, raccoons, deer and humans all have in common? All are mammals and have been sighted in Dunwoody Park.

 

July 7 - 11
PARK AFTER DARK: (SPECIAL TIME! 3:30 pm - 9:30 pm) What happens when the sun goes down? Campers will explore nocturnal animals, the planets, moon and stars. Fernbank's Skylab planetarium comes to visit.

 

July 14 - 18
ROCKS ROCK!: Become a geologist for the week. Make volcanoes. Find rocks. Create fossils. Decorate a "cave" with petroglyphs.

 

July 21 - 25
EARTHWISE EXERCISE: Play games and learn how to help our Earth. Play Ozone Dodgeball and Recycle Relay. Recycle your banana peels, your soda bottles, your water!

 

August 4 - 8
RIVER OF WORDS & COLORS: What's your watershed? What's your ecological footprint? Once you know, and care about, your spot on earth, make art & poetry to capture its wonders.

 

 

JUNIOR RANGER CAMP: Rising 4th - 6th Graders

Be one of the first Junior Rangers! Explore, learn about, and protect the Chattahoochee River. The National Park Service has just developed this curriculum, and DNC is proud to be the first camp to offer it. Learn about flora and fauna, native American heritage along the river, and early settlers' use of the river for transportation, fishing and industry. Learn to canoe in the lagoon, to safely enjoy the park, to make a difference in your watershed . . . and have a great time along the way!
